I broke my toilet approximately 10 months ago and have not got around to fixing it yet. so i have figured out that the problem is the flapper within the tank of the toilet is worn and has created a loose seal. It has been constantly running after the toilet has finished flushing. So i was wondering i can see that you can buy a Eljer Toilet Flapper or a simple generic toilet flap from target, do i need to buy the Eljer brand or can i simply use any type of flapper?
Answer
You should be able to buy most generic flappers. however not all are the same but you can find a number of Eljer toilet flappers here ranging from $2 to $6 so really if you want to purchase a good quality eljer toilet flapper i would recommend looking at some of the ones on this site. Also just a few tips when replacing it..
1. turn the water off when repairing it
2. give the tank a clean while you are there
3. make sure the flapper chain is not to long or to short
4. if it does not seal properly put some Valvoline on the underside of the rubber flapper
Thanks for the question and i hope this help!
Turn the water to the toilet off and remove the flap, find one like it and replace. Should work well. Be sure to clean the surface where it closes. If it doesn’t seal good, put a thin coat of Vaseline on the underside of the new flap.

It is also very important that the flush handle is installed correctly and is not hitting the tanks lid which will make the lever stick and intern continually run after flushing.

What Is A Toilet Flapper?
A toilet flapper is a rubber part which resides inside of the toilets water tank. This piece of the toilet is responsible for sealing the water in and also releasing the water when you have flushed. This is always a big reason why your toilet continues to run after you have flushed.
An Eljer toilet flapper along with most other high quality flappers, will last approximately 4-5 years. The reason why the flapper will only last this long is due to the chlorine and other chemicals in the water. These types of chemicals will slowly deteriorate the rubber and over time results in a leaking toilet. It would be a good practice to check your toilet flapper at least once a year to make sure the seal is still holding tight and there is no slimy build up around it. In many countries there is a water shortage and a leaking toilet can leak more than 150 gallons of liquid per day.
If you would like to know if your Eljer toilet flapper is leaking a good indication would be to place a table spoon of food coloring into your tank and wait 20 minutes. If you see the food coloring in the bottom of you toilet bowl then there is a high possibility that you toilet flapper needs replacing.
If you compare the amount of money your will be wasting on your water bills per year to the price of a toilet flapper you will be amazed. If you are wasting say 100 gallons per day with a leaking flapper you will be looking a few hundred dollars per year in water rates, compared to the price of a 5 dollar toilet part.
